Case numbers do not run sequentially. The Jackson State University Police Department assigns a case number for all reportable activities, both criminal and non-criminal. Only the case numbers generated for criminal activity are listed in the crime log.


This Crime Log contains reportable activities for all locations of Jackson State University. Hard copies can be printed from the on-line version or may be viewed at the Department of  Public Safety on Dalton Street.

According to federal law, an institution may withhold any of the required fields of entry, i.e., the nature, date, location and/or disposition if any of the following conditions apply:
1. The disclosure is prohibited by law.
2. If disclosure would jeopardize the confidentiality of the victim.
3. If disclosure would jeopardize and ongoing investigation or the safety of an individual.
4. If disclosure would cause a suspect to flee or evade detection.
5. If disclosure would result in the destruction of evidence.
 
Open Case: The case is currently being investigated by JSU PD.
Unfounded: The case is determined through investigation to be false or baseless.
Closed: The case due to a plethora of reasons to include but limited to: ( not enough information to continue the investigation, no suspects in the case, no witnesses in the case, no evidence in the case, no further actionable leads in the case).

Internal:
The case was referred to another department within the University to be handled administratively, i.e., Student Life, Human Resources.
Referred
External:
The case was referred to another agency. This refers to case that are referred to other law enforcement agencies, courts or agencies outside the JSU Organization for disposition.
